For many people, doing a tour of Egypt starts in Cairo, a bustling city of some 20 million people on the banks of the River Nile.

Everyone who visits Cairo goes to the Giza Plateau to see the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx. You’ll almost certainly go onto Saqqara to see the Step Pyramid. Another must see in Cairo is the Egyptian Museum.

Egypt Travel Photography

I spent a month travelling all over Egypt in January 2019. This is part one of a retrospective series of travel photography images documenting my Egypt trip.

Giza Plateau and Necropolis

Everyone visits the 4th Dynasty Necropolis situated on the Giza Plateau, a site elevated some 60 metres above sea level on the outskirts of modern day Cairo. Giza needs no introduction, being home to the famous Great Pyramid of Khufu and The Sphinx. Most visitors are tempted into taking a Camel ride, I know I did. I do worry about the welfare of the animals though?

Saqqara

You’re also likely to be visiting the vast ancient burial ground at Saqqara, which served as a Royal Necropolis mostly between the 1st and 6th Dynasties. Saqqara is a vast archaeological site where you’ll see the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser plus various mastabas and tombs.

Egyptian Museum

No visit to Cairo is complete without going to the Egyptian Museum, home to the famous Tutankhamen collection and many ancient wonders.

During my visit the museum was located in its original building in downtown Cairo, but during 2019 it began the move to its impressive new facility at Giza, known as The Grand Egyptian Museum.
